“Men are only so good as their technical developments allows them to be”– George Orwell

Science and technology provide valuable tools with which to promote sustainable development and social progress in member countries. Around the Commonwealth, there are many examples of science and technology playing a crucial role in social and economic development in areas such as:

  • working on malaria prevention
  • combating climate change
  • developing renewable sources of energy

Commonwealth agencies support research in science and technology which contributes to socio-economic growth and poverty alleviation across member countries, by working in such areas as:

  • helping to develop appropriate and inclusive science and technology policies and strategies
  • identifying the social and economic impact of new and emerging technologies on communities
  • helping vulnerable groups participate in innovation, science, and technology policy debates
  • working with partnership organisations to provide funding for science and technology research projects
